The Basics of Controlling Tartar Buildup

Experiencing tartar buildup is terrible, an absolute nightmare! Nobody likes an appearance of porous, hardened plaque on their gum line. Tartar, also known as dental calculus, came from the buildup of plaque on the surface of the tooth. Once this coat of gunk is not taken care of, it develops into tartar. 

How does tartar form?

Despite having great oral care at home, bacteria are still present in the mouth. These bacteria mix with the proteins and food byproduct to create a sticky film. This transparent and sticky film is called plaque; it sticks to the teeth and other dental works inside the mouth. Luckily, plaque can be kept at bay by brushing and flossing daily. If it is left uncared for, tartar forms below and along the gum line. Tartar cannot be removed by oral care at home; it requires special tools in the dentist’s office. The health risk of tartar includes receding gums and periodontal disease.

Spotting tartar 

Tartar is visible. Unlike plaque, which is a transparent film, tartar is a mineral buildup that can be spotted along the gum line. It is usually yellow or brown. 


Tips to prevent tartar from building up

  • Brushing daily for two minutes at a time helps in removing plaque. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Make sure the toothbrush is in the right size to reach the back teeth. 
  • Choose a tartar control toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride protects the enamel and remineralizes the teeth. Tartar control toothpaste contains active ingredients that help fight plaque-causing bacteria. 
  • Always remember to floss. The toothbrush cannot reach all the areas that need cleaning. Flossing makes sure that all the plaque in between teeth is removed to prevent tartar from forming inside those hard to reach areas. 
  • Carefully choosing what to eat will help prevent tartar. Sugary and starchy food breed plaque-causing bacteria inside the mouth. These type of foods produce harmful acid in the mouth. A person should not entirely give up on eating these foods. It is essential to be mindful of how much sweets a person eats. Brushing and rinsing the mouth after a sugary snack is a good practice. 
  • Avoid smoking. According to some studies, people smoking cigarettes and using tobacco products are highly susceptible to tartar buildup.
